According to the Road Traffic Accident Act
of 1988 an accident is defined as:-
An accident resulting in bodily injury to any
person or damage to property caused by or arising out of the use of a motor
vehicle on the road or other public place in England and Wales.
You have certain responsibilities after an
accident which it is necessary for you to fulfil. Whether or not you have fulfilled these responsibilities
will be taken in consideration if you make a claim for injuries or damage
suffered as a result of a road traffic accident.
What
you Need to do Right after an Accident:-
-
Immediately after the accident,
you must share your contact information (name and address of the owner of the
vehicle if necessary) with anyone who has reasonable grounds to ask for it.
-
You must report the accident to
the police within 24 hours of your accident and provide the police with details
of the accident; including the name and address of the other driver, together
with his/her vehicle registration number and insurance details if known. This
information will also be required when you make a claim for injuries suffered
in a road traffic accident.
-
You must also exchange
insurance information with anyone who has reasonable grounds to ask for it. If
you do not have the insurance certificate at the time of the accident, you must
provide it to the police within 7 days of the accident to prove that you have
valid insurance.
